In a nutshell, Negotiation simply means to coerce or persuade the other parties, either one person or many to nod and say "Yes". It is an art of persuasion that can create significant value out from this course of action, for example if you are asking for 2 + 2 and you only ask for it, it will just give you a 4 but if you negotiate for it, you might even achieve 22. This is the power of Negotiation and learning it will lead you to ultimate success in your personal life and career.

In this post, I will focus on 5 tips and techniques to improve your negotiation skills.

1. Know your Objective

When you want to negotiate for something, you must first identify the "something" and be prepared for the discussion. A person who has done his homework beforehand will sound more meaningful throughout the process and nonsense conversation will break rapport that will in term break the deal.

2. Control your emotion

During a negotiation process, there is always a time when conflict of interest occur, bear in mind to keep your cool and deal with it calmly. If you begin to shout and threaten, you will force the other party to put up a defensive wall and back out. Remember this, nobody likes bully or felt threatened. Deals are only possible if both parties feel there are some gains for themselves.

3. Be an uninterested buyer or seller

Always give the impression that you are not desperate or very keen in getting the things you desire, believe me, this technique make wonder.

4. Timing are critical

Timing plays a major role in negotiation and there is always good and bad time. For example, if u choose to negotiate during a bad time, even the most simplest request will be declined. Some of the bad timings are when the other party is enraged, tired, stressed or occupied with other matters.

5. Effective listening

Be a good listener, ask a question and listen, do not keep talking non-stop. This will allow you to gather more information on what the other negotiator wants.
